Dingboche, Khumbu, Nepal

A photograph from my 1987 trek in Nepal. This is a view up the valley at Dingboche in the Khumbu region of Nepal, near Everest. I wasn’t supposed to be there, I was trekking solo and had taken a wrong path earlier, but discovered my mistake when I started seeing the huts of Dingboche. Up the valley in the background is Makalu, 5th highest peak in the world at 27,766 ft. My goal for the day was Pheriche on the trail to Everest base camp, another overnight altitude acclimatization stop at 14,340 ft. Rather than retrace my steps back to the trail juncture, I walked over the ridge between Dingboche and Pheriche and was rewarded with this unique view of the valley.
