Tengboche (Thyangboche) Monastery, Nepal

I spent a couple days resting and recovering at Tengboche monastery during my trek from Jiri to Kala Patar near Mt. Everest base camp. I discovered that Sir Edmund Hillary was at Tengboche building a school with a large group of New Zealanders. I volunteered for a day hauling rocks for the foundation of the school. Hard work but fun with the group of people who were there. I met Sir Ed, he thanked me for helping out and shook my hand, but I now regret that I didn’t get a photograph with him.
Tengboche is situated within a day’s walk of Namche Bazaar, at the top of a very long hard climb from the Dudh Kohsi River, with stunning views toward Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. I spent 2 nights in a lodge near the monastery on a bed which was situated close to a window so that I could look out at Everest while laying down, and I remember waking at night several times and seeing Everest and the surrounding peaks in the moonlight. What superb magical nights those were!
