Probably our single best day in South Florida was a trip out to the Dry Tortugas Islands. Its about 70 miles west of Key West, and you can go by high speed catamaran or by plane. We went by boat and it was a fantastic day, the only bad part of the trip was having to leave the island after a relatively short stay of a few hours, 2/3 of the day are spent on the boat getting to and returning from the islands, but it is still worth it. Flights out will make the trip shorter, but you don't spend any more time on the island. Fort Jefferson occupies the better part of Garden Key, I read that it was the largest masonry structure in the western hemisphere. The Dry Tortugas appeals to two of my favorite activities, photographing ruins, and snorkeling in pristine waters with good coral reefs.
