• Coal Cableway Station, Svalbard, Arctic Norway, 78 degrees North. Coal from six different
mines in Svalbard was transported across the landscape in large
buckets hung on cableways. This unique infrastructure is found in
Longyearbyen, Svalbard, where coal mining is ongoing but being
phased out. Of the seven mines that have operated here, one
remains active. Much of the coal mined is burned locally to
provide electricity and hot water for heating, illustrating a feedback
loop that is contributing to the extreme warming seen in this
region of the Arctic.
